Sometimes I feel the need to use my computer to write words and not screenshot US Weekly emails.
I’m aware that a movie about seven elderly Brits who move into an Indian hotel sounds like a red flag to many people, so I understand why you think I’m joking or perverse or wrong in likingThe Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as much as I do. But I’m not. And it’s my goal to make you believe me.
The only ones that actually seem possible are Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score, but a Best Supporting Actor/Actress nod would certainly be a welcome surprise.
I found this photo of what I will look like if The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel isn’t nominated for any Oscars on Thursday.

I’ll take full responsibility for this, thank you.

It’s a movie about life? I guess? That’s annoyingly broad, but it works. Because The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about life. Life’s pleasure’s and pains. A past you regret. A future you wish to make the most of - regardless of how much is left. And beyond that personal level, it’s also about our attempt to scrutinize and understand the lives of others until realizing that simply accepting and appreciating those lives may be the most fulfilling action of all. It’s joyful, gentle, and (to my surprise) completely unpatronizing - to both India and those in their twilight years.
We’re all on the same journey and should make the most of it, I guess. And a movie like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel takes something as disgustingly sappy as that sentiment and manages to turn it into something that warms the hell out of your heart.
