"There is no way not to tell it right. It is a storyteller’s wet dream."
When you see Short Term 12 (and you will see it), pay attention to the opening and closing scenes. Both are centered around stories told by John Gallagher Jr. to other employees at the short term housing complex where the movie is set and they’re brilliantly written and performed and stand out as two of my favorite movie bookends of all time. (Really!) I’ve seen the movie twice now and find my thoughts returning to their perfection constantly and if the movie has one single flaw it’s that the movie closes not with the end of his story but with a brief, pseudo-comedic coda.
But all of that’s forgivable because the rest of Short Term 12 isn’t just wonderful - it’s an actual wonder.
