I walked into the elevator bank at work and saw one of my favorite coworkers.

Her headphones were on. My earbuds were in. We nodded, smiled and kept listening to music until finally one of us broke - I already can’t remember who. Maybe we removed them at the same time. Though she’s at least 10 years older than me, her headphones put mine to shame.

“How’s it going, Bobby?”

“Fine. How’s your morning so far?”

“I’m still wearing my sunglasses – that’s how my morning is so far.”

We both laughed quietly and commiserated over X, Y, and Z until the elevator dinged. “I was watching the names on TV this morning, so I guess I have nothing to complain about,” she said while stepping on. “Life is just fine. You know 9/11 was on a Tuesday, too.” I nodded as she went on, her sunglasses still covering her eyes. “It was a day just like today. Not a cloud in the sky.”
